Abstract
8890. Thach, B. W. April 21, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Harvesting-machines.-A machine for harvesting and thrashing peas, beans, and the like is provided with special adjustable means for cutting the crop and elevating it to the thrashing- apparatus, which consists of crushing-rollers to break the pods, toothed bars to shake the stalks and pods and to discharge them behind the machine, a separator to sift the peas &c., and an elevator to discharge them into a sack or other receptacle. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the machine, and Fig. 12 a view of the frames carrying the cutting-apparatus. The pole or tongue 3 is connected to blocks loosely mounted on the axle 1 by an arched bar 4 and braces 5, and the front of the machine is raised and adjusted by means of the lever 11, spring catch 12, toothed segment 13, spindle 7, arms 8, and links 9. The wheels are connected to the axle by ratchets. The framework consists of the supporting frame 14 and the elevating frame 15, which is composed of two inclined boards 16 converging at the rear, two guide boards 17, and a trough 18. The cutting- apparatus consists of two stationary blades 24 and a reciprocating blade 26 on a bar 25. Lifting-shoes 20 are applied at the points of the two frames carrying the cutting-apparatus, and the inner bars 22 are furnished with offsets 23 to bring them nearer to the ground than the outer bars 21. Motion is imparted to the bar 25 by means of a pitman connected to a crank on a shaft 28, which is rotated by bevel and spur gearing from the axle. The cut crop is forced along the trough 18 to the fluted rollers 41, 42 by projections 39 on some of the links of chains 38, which are driven by sprocket-wheels 34 and bevel-wheels 35, 36. Stripping-bars 40 are provided. The rollers are connected by long toothed gearing, motion being imparted to them by a chain. The V-shaped ribs on them inter-mesh with one another without touching. From the rollers, the material falls upon toothed bars 47, mounted in openings in a transverse bar 48 and vibrated in alternation by cranks on a shaft 49 rotated by a band from a shaft 53. The peas fall upon a screen 59 attached to a separating-shoe 55 vibrated by a crank on the shaft 53. They then pass along the trough 56 to a well 57, elevator 60, and spout 61. A platform is provided to support a sack or other receptacle, and the elevator is driven by a chain 63.
