8639. Shaw, T. April 15. L o o m picking- motions.-The picker N<1> is connected by a link N to an arm M fixed at the top of a vertical shaft K, which is mounted at the back of the shuttle box L. A toothed segment of a wheel J, fixed on the bottom end of the shaft K, gears with a toothed segment formed on a short lever H which is pivoted on the lay I. At each alternate backward movement of the lay, the lever H is struck by a bowl G on a bell-crank lever E, which is oscillated by an adjustable tappet made in two parts C, C<1> and fixed on the tappet shaft, the shaft K is partially turned, and the picker propels the shuttle from the box. The lever H is checked by a buffer spring attached to the lay-sword, and the picker is returned by a spring acting on the shaft K. Looms, checking shuttles in; shuttle-relief motions. -The shuttle is checked as it enters the box L by a flat spring Q fixed inside the back of the box. As the spring Q is forced back by the shuttle, an incline on its projecting end acts on an incline on a sliding rod R, which is moved longitudinally against the action of a spring S. When the incline on the spring Q has passed over that on the rod R, it is locked thereby, so that all pressure is taken from the shuttle while it is picked. The spring Q is released by a small cam T on the shaft K acting on a lug U on the rod R. Instead of the end of the spring Q projecting through the back of the box, the incline on the rod R may be formed on a projection which passes through the back of the box, so that a straight bar R and practically straight spring Q may be used.
