Abstract

8559. Kirschuiok, J. April 14. Undercutting &c. ; quarrying ; hydraulic mining; laying dust in mines.-In mining and quarrying operations, grooves are cut by means of fluid jets or fluid jets with sand or small stones in suspension, thus inter alia obviating the raising of coal dust and utilizing in the case of deep seams the natural pressure of the water. As applied to a coal seam k, grooves s may be cut by means of jets of high-pressure water issuing from nozzles a, b, c. Experiments have shown that with a pressure of 30 atmospheres a jet of one-eighth of an inch diameter gives a good result. Sand and the like may be added to the jet, the nozzle being formed like an injector and communicating with a reservoir containing sand, or the sand may he added to the water under pressure. Instead of a jet of water and sand, a jet of compressed air and sand may be used in combination with a jet of water or of water and sand.
