6607. Reynolds, W. F., and Travers, E. J. March 18. Roller bearings; lubricating.-The rollers are held in position by a cage of special construction, and lubricant is distributed by them. The cage, Fig. 5, consists of the end rings a, formed in halves fastened together by the dowel pins b, and longitudinal bars f with nuts g. The bearing-rollers c have conical ends bearing in the cage holes, the holes being lined with steel bushes h perforated for lubrication. End play of the cage is prevented by set-screws i, Fig. 14, with rounded ends, which pass through the plummer block and bear against the faces of the rings a. To allow for elongation of the rollers, spring cases j, Fig. 11, are fastened to the rings a. They are loosely mounted on the rods k, and the rings a and rollers c are kept in contact by the springs l. Pins n on the rings a engage in slots m of the case j, and prevent backlash. For long bearings, two sets of short rollers are employed with an intermediate ring a. This ring and the end rings or spring cases j are provided with teeth which gear with pinions p keyed on the shaft q, Fig. 14. The rollers c raise lubricant from the bottom of the chamber in the plummer-block. One or more of them may be tubular and be provided with slits or holes o, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, for the better distribution of the lubricant.
