Gas stoves.-An ornamental gas stove, which may be fitted readily to a n existing fire - place, is con. structed so as to have the appearance of an open fire, and to serve both as a heater for the room, and as a heater for cooking- vessels. The burner chamber 4 supports a heating- chamber 5, and has a removable pocket 30 of transparent or translucent material at the front. The lower section 4 has a main frontplate 8 with flanged sides to overlap the metal part 2 which is in contact with the fireplace wall 1. An inverted perforated box 16 holds the front, sides, and back together, acts as a baffle-plate, and forms a support for cooking-vessels. An auxiliary front-plate 18 fits against the plate 8 and has guides, opposite an igniting opening 12, for a slide 24, and flanges 19, 20 which carry a series of vertical bars 25 and a sliding casing 22 having mica or similar panes. Fragments 34 of glass with smooth faces may be used at the lower part, and fragments 35 with ground surfaces at the upper part. The perforated gas burner pipe 38 is connected to a pipe 37 resting on a shelf 36 having a gas cock the handle of which is situated in a recess in a name plate secured to the base 64 which may have vertical air-inlet slots. The back 15 may have one or more air-inlet openings 43 with hinged doors 45 operated by rods connected to a handle projecting through a slot in one side of the base. The front of the chamber 5 has two openwork panels and two openwork sliding doors. A reflector 63 is located between the burners and the back 15. In a modification, the main front-plate carries the grate-bar plate which may have a pocket of translucent material protected by one or more removable guard-plates of white or coloured glass or mica. The gassupply pipe has no horizontal return branch, and the reflector extends under the burners.
