Abstract

4598. Baker, W. C. Feb. 24. Axle-boxes; hubs.-Ball bearings for wheels, especially for the steering or running wheels of automobiles or other vehicles, are arranged so that one ring of balls is situated between the spoke flanges. The axle or spindle D is formed with an inner collar D<1> close to the knuckle spindle G of the steering-arm G<1>. The spindle D has a parallel portion to receive a loose, but fitting, cone ring C<1>, or is tapered between this part and a reduced parallel portion supporting the outer bearing-cone C. The hub is formed in two portions A, A<1> carrying the flanges a, a'. The inner portion A' has a stamped metal cup B<1> to complete the bearing for the large balls F<1>, a packing K<1> and a closing- ring K<2> being employed to exclude dust, water, &c. The outer cone C slides on the spindle D and holds the smaller balls F in the cup B. Both bearings are adjusted simultaneously by a cap nut which can be locked in position. An outer cap K is threaded on to the part A<1>.
