Abstract

4468. Turner, H. Feb. 23. Couplings, automatic.-An automatic coupling for railway coaches, wagons, &c. consists of a hook working on a vertical pivot and held in position by a weighted lever which also carries the pin engaged by the opposite hook of a duplicate coupling. The hinged hook D, entering the flared mouth of the coupling box, engages with a sliding pin E, supported by a weighted bell-crank lever I, the arm L of which keeps the opposite hook engaged. Uncoupling is effected by means of a handle N, or electrically by passing a current through a solenoid, which has a core or plunger placed over, and connected with, the sliding pin, the latter uncoupling means being also used for slipping carriages. The solenoids are connected in series for simultaneous action. The arm L may be replaced by a spring fixed to the coupling-box side and connected to the hook.
