Abstract

4037. Webster, J. K. Feb. 18. Lathes; chucks; mandrels.- In a machine for turning and chamfering the faces of nuts, a number of headstocks B are arranged on a suitable framing. Each headstock carries a spindle C, driven from the main shaft by a loosely - mounted spurwheel h and clutch G, and having a hollow centre into which a screwed mandrel D, to take the nut D to be faced, is so fitted that if the end gets broken off, the mandrel can be screwed out and used again. A cap F holding a plate f with a hexagonal or other shaped hole concentric with the mandrel to fit the nut is freely mounted on the end of the spindle and is rotated to screw the nut off the mandrel on completion of the operation by putting in the clutch P. The slide-rest W is traversed by means of a drum cam X on a shaft V worm-driven from a countershaft T. On coming to the end of the traverse, the lever Y comes against a stop y', thus feeding the tools w<1> back from the work, a stop y<1> at the other end feeding the tools forward again. When the facing and chamfering is finished by the tools w<1>, a tool z is moved forward by a cam-operated lever and removes the burr from the edge of the hole in the nut. A cam 4 on the shaft V then puts the clutch G out of gear by means of the levers L, M and throws the clutch P into action whereby the spindle C is stopped and the nut screws off the mandrel and drops into a tray S below.
