Abstract

3654. Echivard, P. G. Feb. 13. Transferring designs; transfers.-In transferring typographic or lithographic prints to transparent or other surfaces of glass &c., a transfer is first formed by coating a sheet of unglued paper with gum arabic, and a layer of collodion, to which a few drops of castor oil have been added. The paper when dry is then printed on in one or more colours, and afterwards coated with a mixture of mordant and storax. This transfer sheet is then dipped into alcohol, placed upon the glass or other surface, squeegeed, and dried, then damped and pulled off, leaving the design firmly fixed to the glass. In some cases, the transfer is inked with ordinary mordant and bronzed as usual before the colour-printing is made. The glass may be coated with a layer of albumen, which is rendered insoluble by the alcohol in the transfer. The ground of a translucent proof is printed with a mordant slightly tinged, instead of mordant and storax. For opaque proofs, the transferred design is coated on the back with printing-ink of the desired colour, or with metal varnish and alcohol. The coatings of albumen, and mordant and storax are unnecessary in the latter case.
