Armatures ; cooling and ventilating field magnets.-In motors having a rotating field, in order that the coils may be wound in a turning-lathe, the field magnets form the stator round which the armature rotates. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the magnet core 4 is mounted on a grooved sleeve 3, and is formed with partly-closed slots 14 which widen towards the periphery. The armature rotor 7 is carried by a ring or plate 6 keyed on the shaft 5. Perforations are formed in the plate so that a flow of air, as indicated by the arrows, is produced when the armature rotates. Perforations may also be formed in the iron plates forming the core 4.
