Abstract

463. Beach, W. H. Jan. 7. Plasters.-Medicated plasters are made with a foundation of " swansdown calico," and the medicament is applied, by stencilling or printing, in the form of separated portions or facets forming a regular pattern. Adhesive plasters are made with a foundation of antiseptic lint, the adhesive material being applied in the form of discontinuous stripes. The stencilling-apparatus consists of a stencil plate c, with bevelled apertures d, upon which the foundation a is laid for dipping into the trough n containing the medicament or adhesive. Pressure is applied to the back of the fabric by means of the block f which fits loosely between the upturned ends g of the stencil plate and may be brought into operation by rotating it so that the studs k are forced downwards by the cam-grooves l. In order that imprisoned air may escape, a perforated plate m is interposed between the fabric and the pressure block. The medicament or adhesive is heated by means of gas jets, and a scraper p is provided to remove superfluous liquid when the stencil is removed from the trough. Between the intervals of stencilling, the stencil is kept warm by placing it on a grid supported on or over a plate heated by a gas jet. In place of stencilling, the plasters may be produced by block or other printing, in which case the portions of the machine in contact with the medicament or adhesive are kept hot while the platen carrying the fabric is kept cool. The rollers may be cork-covered metal tubes internally heated. The portions to be kept hot may, while not in actual use, be kept in a heated chamber, while the platen may be kept in a cold chamber, or may be made hollow and cooled by the circulation of cold water. The hot and cold chambers would be provided with sliding doors so connected to the driving-gear of the press as to be opened and closed concurrently with the various movements of the parts of the press, as required.
