Abstract

28,707. Meldrum Bros., and Meldrum, J. J. Dec. 31. Refuse-consuming furnaces.-Relates to a portable refuse destructor, which is especially serviceable as a military sanitary apparatus for the destruction of camp refuse and offal. It comprises a furnace a, Fig. 1, at one end, consisting of an iron or steel casing lined with firebrick with a grate g and ashpit k below, and at the other end a multitubular steam boiler i for supplying steam for creating a forced draught in the furnace. Refuse is introduced at the door d and thrown upon the grate g and deadplates h, h<1> at thesidesand ends of the furnace ; any liquid or semi-liquid matter to be destroyed is introduced at a door or hopper at the side or top of the furnace and allowed to fall into a "hearth" i where it is evaporated. The gases from the furnace pass through an opening e<3> in the back wall and enter a chamber e, which is separated from side chambers e<1> by partitions m as shown in Fig. 3, and then pass through the central tubes of the boiler, after which they return, as shown by the arrows, into the side chambers e<1> by means of the side tubes, and finally escape into a dome p and chimney q. A sliding firebrick damper r is arranged at the top of the central chamber e, and is adapted to be operated to open or close communication with the chimney for regulating the amount of heat transmitted to the boiler. The dome p and bottom plates of the chambers e, e<1> are provided with doors for cleaning purposes. The steam generated in the boiler is supplied to steam-jet air-forcing blowers l situated at the back of the ashpit k, which is provided with a door for removing ashes, and may be supplied to jets within the chimney q. The whole structure is mounted upon a frame attached to the axles of the wheels w, the front axle being supported on a central pivot.
