Abstract

28,592. Linley, C. M. Dec. 29. Clutches.-A friction clutch for variable transmission gears of motor cars, motor boats, &c, consists of the disc A, Fig. 1, fast on the shaft D, and the loose discs B, C, one of which carries the gear-wheel E or the like. The disc C may have a bevelled flange F engaging a corresponding conical flange G on the disc A. The discs B, C are connected by a number of pivoted links H of such a length as to permit the discs B, C to remain normally free of the disc A. When slight frictional contact is made between the discs C, A by the sliding collar K, or other means, the links H assume oblique positions, and the disc A is firmly gripped between the others. The links H are normally held at right-angles to the discs by the spring L, Fig. 3, the stop M allowing motion in one direction only. When the clutch is used to connect two shafts, the disc B is keyed to the driving-shaft, and the driven shaft carries the loose disc C and the fast disc A, or the division of the shaft may occur between the discs A, C. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement of the links H and springs, permitting relative motion of the discs in both directions. The pins J engage slots in the links and are capable of leaving the slots when relative motion in either direction occurs, as shown by the dotted lines. Ordinary links may also be provided to take the strain between the discs B, C. In a modification, the two links H are drawn together by a single spring against a single stop M, and bear against opposite sides of a single pin J.
