Abstract
26,628. Ryland, T. J. F., and Louis, E.S. Dec. 8. [Cognate applications No.26,841, A.D. 1908, dated Dec. 10, and No. 28,455, A.D. 1908, dated Dec. 30.1 Motor road vehicles.-In an expanding pulley of the interpenetrating cone type, applicable as an element of a variable-speed gear for a motor-vehicle &c., the arms 4 of each half are set helically in relation to its boss or nave, so that the two halves move relatively with a screw action. Corresponding helical grooves are formed between the arms in the nave of each member to obviate friction when the members interpenetrate. The direction of the belicles may be such that the pull of the belt tends to screw one part into the other, serving to automatically grip the belt or to take up slack. One half of the pulley is keyed to the shaft, the other half being loosely mounted thereon, or, as shown in Fig. 4, being adapted to engage helical grooves 35 therein, such helices being of the same pitch as the helically formed arms 4 to guide the latter into engagement. The arms 4 may be formed with extension pieces 4<a>, Fig. 1. In the form shown in Fig. 4, a loose roller 30 retained in position by a spring or springs, or by a threaded shoulder on the shaft and retaining-rings 33, 34, is arranged to take the belt when the pulley halves are moved apart. As applied to a variable-speed gear the expanding pulley may be used in conjunction with a non-expanding pulley and a jockey pulley to take up slack ; or a pair of expanding pulleys may be used, in which case means are provided for simultaneously adjusting both pulleys so that the resistance of one pulley to open is balanced by the tendency of the other pulley to close. In an arrangement applied to a motor - vehicle, a variable-speed gear of this type is arranged between the motor and driven shafts. The adjusting-means in this arrangement comprise sliding rods connected through bell-crank levers to the pulley halves with play to permit the automatic gripping action.
