Abstract

27,483. Keefer, W. B. Dec. 15. Printing yarns, threads, and the like; printing- rollers.-Relates to a method of printing yarns, threads or similar material in several colours by a single continuous operation so as to form, when woven into a fabric by a single continuous operation, a complete pattern. The yarns are fed from spools a, Fig. 1, to a reed b adapted to spread out and hold the yarns in one plane. From thence they pass over an octagonal drum c, having grooves c<1> each of which receives one or a number of yarns, and round a grooved guide-roller c' to a table A, preferably rectangular, the four faces of which are provided with grooves a' corresponding in number with the grooves in the drum c and roller c'. The yarns pass over three sides of the table and from thence under a grooved octagonal roller d and over a series of skeleton reels e<1> arranged within a steaming and colour - fixing chamber e. At either side of the table are arranged three rollers f, f<1>, f<2>, Fig. 2, partially submerged in dye-stuffs carried by vats g, g<1>, g', each vat containing a different colour or tint. Three rollers h, h<1>, h<2>, on which are arranged blocks or types i, move across the upper surface of the table. The types fit into the grooves a' in the table, and are brought into contact with the yarns therein, so that, as the rollers move across the table one after the other, the yarns are printed in colours. The types are so arranged as to leave a space between adjoining colours to prevent running. The type-rollers h, h<1>, h<2> receive colour from one or other of the sets of rollers f, f<1>, f<2>, the type-rollers and the other rollers being rotated together. The rollers f, f<1>, f<2> are only raised against the typerollers after the latter have reached a position immediately over them ; normally they occupy the position shown in dotted lines. While the type-rollers are receiving colour, the table A is rotated through a quarter of a revolution, bring- ing another length of the yarns under the operation of the typerollers. The sides of the table are cleaned successively by a rotary brush a<4>, Fig. 1, carried by a pivoted bracket a<5>. The brush is held against the table by a spring a<7> acting on the other end of the bracket. A strip a<8> of felt or other absorbent material is arranged on the bracket in advance of the brush, and absorbs any fluid matter accumulating in the grooves a<2>. In the rear of the brush is arranged a perforated tube a<9> from which issues flame jets a<10> to dry the grooves, and make them ready to receive a fresh length of yarns as the table is rotated.
