Abstract

27,474. Fell, J. C., [Winsor & Jerauld Manufacturing Co.]. Dec. 15. Stretching and tentering.-Ordinary and diagonal or zig-zag tentering is effected in a machine constructed with chain rails a, b, Fig. 1, hinged to, and adjustable by screws e on, cross-bars c which are pivoted on fixed brackets d, and power is transmitted through shafts mounted low down to reduce the strain and vibration. The rails are oscillated in opposite directions, to effect the zig-zag tentering, by a crosshead t pivoted to a fixed bracket u and actuated by links s, s<1> from the vertical arms 9, 9<1> of pivoted bell-crank levers. The horizontal arms q, q<1> of these levers are operated by eccentrics or variable-throw crankpins 8, 8<1> carried by low shafts o, o', driven in opposite directions by a clutch 2 and bevel gearing, as shown, from the low shaft f. A cushioning- device is introduced into this drive by forming the back of the pinion 5, which is loose on the shaft j, with jaws projecting into, and alternating with jaws formed in, a sleeve w fixed on the shaft j, and inserting blocks of rubber and wedge tightening-devices between the jaws. The endless tentering-chains are driven by sprocket-wheels z, z<1> actuated by bevel gearing from a shaft y, Figs. 1, 3, and 9, which is driven by a universal joint in the hollow boss of a wheel 34 gearing with a wheel 33 on the shaft f. The shaft y can thus oscillate with the rails, and the ends are supported on guides 48, 48<1>. The machine is centered, in changing from zig-zag to ordinary tentering, by a bevel-nosed spring bolt 16, Fig. 6, arranged to engage the notched end of the arm q at midposition. The bolt is pressed forward by a spring 17 from a sleeve 18 mounted on a boss 19, and, in centering, the sleeve is advanced and locked by means of a pin 21, which is turned into a lateral notch extending from the slot 24. The bolt is released when the attendant raises the pin, a spring 22 then withdrawing the sleeve. The spring bolt may be arranged to engage a notched disc on one of the shafts o, o', or both crank discs or both arms q, q<1> may be engaged by spring bolts. In a modification, the bell-crank levers are replaced by pivoted vertical levers connected to the links s, s' and oscillated by the variable-throw cranks.
