Abstract

26,413. Garlick, E., and Parkin, J. Dec. 3. Actuating valves and cocks.-Relates to a belt shifter which is caused to move a belt from one pulley to another by closing an electric circuit by means of pressing a button &c., but which may be used to turn off the lever of a steam cock. A weight D, Fig. 1, is suspended by a cord wound around a barrel B, which is fitted with a pulley E and spur-wheel F, the latter gearing with a pinion G on a partly-threaded shaft H. A ratchet I, Figs. 1 and 2, on the shaft H is held by a pawl J, secured to the same shaft K as a lever L which rests on a lever M. On completing the circuit through an electromagnet Q, the armature P supporting the cranked end 0 of a pivoted hammer N is drawn within the coil, and the hammer, in falling, strikes the lever M, releasing the pawl J from the ratchet I. The weight D descends and the shaft H is rotated, the threaded portion driving along a nut to which is attached links S secured to the belt forks T. To stop the fall of the weight, the pulley E is provided with a brake, which is normally held out of action by a spring V but which is actuated by the nut striking the lever W. The nut may be used for actuating other stopping-mechanism, such as to turn the lever of a steam cock &c. According to the Provisional Specification, the weight and nut can be brought back by means of a handle, shown in Fig. 1, and instead of the spur-wheels F, G, a chain and chain-wheels may be employed. A spring-actuated barrel may also be used instead of a barrel and weight.
