Steam-generator fireboxes; air, supplging; smokeconsuming.-Consists in making air chambers and passages in division plates or walls extending across locomotive and other fireboxes, in which the air for secondary combustion is heated before delivery into the heated smoke and gases. The Figure shows a locomotive firebox with water legs at its front and rear, and a pair of water tubes 17 joining them. At the rear, on the top of these tubes, is placed an air chamber 19 consisting of a hollow tile or brick communicating with the outside air by holes 23 through the water legs ; these holes may be protected on the outside by the oil can shelf 24. A similar arrangement is provided at the forward end, where the brick 25 is in connection with a brick 27 having apertures on its lower side for directing air to the smoke and gases. These tiles extend across the firebox, and are supported at the sides by angle brackets. Two such tiles, arched upwards and supporting each other at the centre, may be used. The lower tile 25 has holes pierced through it, not open to the interior of the tile, through which any ashes falling on the tile fall on to the bars.
