Abstract

23,909. Harvey, M. Nov. 4. Portable crucible furnaces.-The furnace is constructed in such a way that it may receive the blast in one part of the foundry and be wheeled to another part where the moulds are situated and there tilted to pour the metal into the casting ladles ; or the furnace may be made stationary. Fig. 1 shows an external view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the furnace with the crucible in place. The furnace is provided with trunnions 2 which are carried by the wheeled frame 5. Rails 8, 9 may be laid down, in which case flanged wheels are used. The tilting is effected by the lever 45. The shell 1 receives the blast from the pipe 38. The blast passes to the fuel within the lined chamber 10 through the gratings 19. The gases escape through openings 36 in the cover blocks. The crucible is supported on the block 21 above the removable bottom of the chamber. It is secured in position at its upper end between blocks 23, 25 which rest on the lining 12, the blocks being held by plates and brackets. One or more of the blocks are removed for charging the chamber. The spout 37 is provided for facilitating the pouring operations. The bottom of the outer shell is formed with the door 40 which is suitably secured. It can serve to catch the metal when the crucible fractures. If desired the outer shell may be dispensed with.
