Abstract
22,980. Rose, R., and Catt, R. Oct. 23. Ironing-machines.-A guard for an ironing or like machine is so constructed, that, when a finger or any other obstruction gets into the moving parts, the machine is automatically reversed, and the obstruction thereby removed. The device is shown as applied to a shirt and collar ironing- machine, in which the articles are ironed between a heated roller F and a moving table E. The table E is driven by mechanism operated by two belts, one crossed and one open, which move the table E forwards and backwards respectively. The forward-driving is started by depressing the treadle B attached to the shaft b, which is thus turned. A hinged arm d, attached to a bracket D on the shaft b, acts on a lever arm 0, attached to a sleeve c loosely mounted on the shaft b, and the arm C causes a rod A to move against the action of a spring a. The rod A moves the crossed belt into the operative position, and the table E is moved forwards. Situated in front of the roller F is a finger-guard G carried by brackets g, and, when this is raised by a finger or other obstacle, a shaft H, provided with a projecting arm h<1>, is turned by means of a rod g<1> and crank h, and the arm h<1> raises the arm d clear of a stop d<1>, against which it normally presses, and the arm C is released from the rod d, and the spring a returns the rod A bringing the open belt into operation, thereby reversing the motion of the table E.
