Motor road vehicles.-Variable-speed gear for motor road vehicles and the like is constructed with a variable-throw crank connected to a pivoted rocking lever provided with links for operating ratchet mechanisms on the driven shaft. In a modified form, two simultaneously-operated variable cranks are employed, or these are separately connected to the ratchet mechanisms. Figs. 3 and 4 show a longitudinal section and a partial transverse section of the variable-throw crank. The hollow shaft d, driven from the motor by bevel gearing c, carries a guide for the pin slida block e and a support for the adjuating-screw p, engaging with the guide-block e. The screw p carries a bevel-wheel o which gears with a bevel-wheel on the hollow shaft m co-axial with the shaft d. The shaft d terminates in a wheel v and is connected to drive the loose wheel u at a higher speed by means of the double wheel 1, 3. A movable clutch block t is feathered on the shaft m and is operated by lever w so that the shaft m can be connected to either the wheel u or the stationary framework. In the first instance, the crank-pin is made outwards and in the second instance inwards. A wedge tripping action is arranged to act on the rod n so that, when the slide e reaches the limit of its traverse in either direction, the rod is moved and by means of the link s &c. changes the position of the clutch t. The various parts are mounted with ball bearings, longitudinal rows x of balls being arranged in continuous channels on each side of the guide-block e. Wedges y, y<1> are set in the guide-block to adjust for proper pressure on the balls.
