Abstract

21,168. Stromborg, F. O. Oct. 2. Centreboards and drop-keels.-For the purpose of increasing the stability of vessels, and allowing speedy turning of the direction, a double balancing safety keel is fitted as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5. The two portions 2, 4 of the keel are alike, and are so arranged that they may be turned in opposite directions by the hand-wheel H, Fig. 5, or in the same direction by the hand-wheel J, through the toothed gearing and bevel-wheels shown. The upper portion of the keel is attached to the sleeve F, which rotates in the bush 7 and freely on the shaft E. To prevent eddies forming behind the keels, a flexible blade 20 is attached. When working together, the keels form an auxiliary to the rudder, facilitating the turning of the vessel. In a modification, the keel sections are supported on a vertical axis and are adapted to be swung laterally.
