Abstract

20,500. DouÙnne, C. Sept. 23. Self-closing valves ; regulating discharge from valves.-Fig. 1 shows the construction of a selfclosing cock iu which the back pressure of fluid in a chamber d, Fig. 1, behind the valve a is utilized for closing the valve after a regulated quantity of liquid has passed. To open the cock, a valve g is forced back by means of a pivoted lever-handle m, and the chamber d is thus put into communication with the atmosphere through the perforated disc e, past the spring-closed valve g, through the passage hand chamber i, past the valve j and through the discharge passage k. The liquid in the chamber d is thus discharged allowing the valve q to be forced open by fluid pressure and liquid to issue through the nozzle. The valve a is forced against a disc c on a rod b which passes loosely through the valve a allowing liquid to escape along it into the chamber d ; the rod b pushes the valve j on to its seat, thereby closing the discharge passage k. The chamber d then fills gradually, the pressure forcing back the valve a to its closed position. An india-rubber membrane p between the valve and the chamber d ensures tightness. To close the valve quickly, the lever-handle is operated to press back the valve j, and consequently the valve a by means of the rod b and disc c. The quantity of liquid discharged is regulated by adjusting the size of the passage in the ring q through which the pin b passes. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, in opening the valve a the back-pressure chamber d is discharged by operating the hollow plug t to drain the plug through the port v and discharge passages v<1>, o, the valve opening by fluid pressure. The plug t is turned to the position shown. The liquid then finds its way along the pin b through the apertures u, u<1> into the hollow plug, in which it rises and compresses the air therein, thereby producing a back pressure which closes the valve. For immediately closing the valve, the plug t is turned to bring the apertures x, y into register with the apertures z, u, so that water from the supply pipe n fills the hollow plug, enters the chamber d, and closes the valve.
