Sewage and foul waters, treating ; seltling ; filtering and straining.-Sewage or other waste fluid is passed from the outfall 8 into a straining-tank 1, divided into two compartments by a horizontal grating formed of parallel iron bars which support a layer of c oke. The coke retains coarser solids and the tower compartment acts as a settling-tank. The liqui passes out through outlet pipes 5 into a main carrier 6, and through sluices 7 into inclined filtering-carriers 10, 11. Each of the latter contains three strainers a and two series of filters b separated by a gravel filter bed 29. In each of the filters, the filtering-medium is held in a receptacle with wooden sides which has its front and back formed of wire netting. The filters are arranged in pairs so that, while one of the pair is in use, the other may be raised to expose its filtering-material to light and air. The gravel bed 29 is confined between end walls 30, 31, the latter having perforations or tubes passing through it in an inclined direction.
