Abstract

18,015. Mills, B. J. B., [Ratignier, M., and Renaud, M. Clerc-]. Aug. 20. Stretching and lentering.-The selvages of the fabric are gripped by nippers i, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which are mounted on, and directly over, the hinge pins x of chains a, b passing round sprocket-wheels c and drums d and round a series of rollers m, n for dragging the warp at an angle to the weft in opposite directions alternately. The wheels c and drums d are carried by parallel frames g, h, one of which is adjustable laterally on carriages r, and the distance between the series of rollers m, n can be regulated by mounting them on adjustable .carriages s. To regulate the divergence of the chains, the drums d and guide-rollers pare adjustably mounted in the frames g, h. The lower nippers u, Figs. 2 and 3, are carried by brackets v on the hinge-pins x, and the upper nippers i are pivoted to the brackets v and normally pressed down bv springs y. Discs fixed to the wheels c and drums d act on the tails 5 of the upper nippers, to open them for releasing and admitting the selvages. The roller l, from which the fabric is drawn, is mounted on a pivot o, to facilitate the feeding of the fabric with the weft at right-angles to the chains. To counteract deviations of the weft threads from this position, and thereby avoid excessive tension on these threads and probable breakage, one of the series of rollers m, n, Fig. 5, may be mounted in a frame adjustable longitudinally by a rack and pinion and laterally by a screw k, and the rollers n are made smaller in diameter than the rollers m so as to reduce the strain on the weft threads at those parts where the warp is dragged from its normal position to the greatest extent. The fabric, when released from the chains, passes through a drying-apparatus, where it is required to be stretched in both directions, and to prevent the longitudinal tension from being transmitted to the part of the fabric being tentered, a guide-roller h and brake roller r are arranged in front of the drying cylinder f or apparatus, the fabric being drawn between the rollers.
