Filters ; cleansing.-A filter, containing a loose or granular filtering- medium, is constructed with a large filtering-surface and isarranged so that the medium may be washed in the filter itself. In the iron cylinder 1 is mounted a sieve drum, consisting externally of channel-shaped sieve members, the ends of which are sorewed to the angle-irons 5 and the bow-shaped parts 6 respectively, and internally of a sieve cylinder 29. together with suitable end walls partially supported on rollers. At one end of the drum is brazed a hollow shaft, passing through a stuffing-box in the casing 1 to a tube upon which are mounted sockets for the supply of air under pressure, the discharge of the filtrate, and the supply of water and steam for cleansing purposes. On the lower part of the casing 1 are sockets for admitting the liquid to be filtered, for discharging residues or washing-water adapted to be used again, and for the discharge of foul washing-water. Sand, broken and sifted coke, or small unglazed porcelain beads are preferably employed as filtering-media. The interior of the drum is filled with the medium up to the height A-B. The medium is washed by a reverse current of water or a mixture of air and water, the drum being meanwhile rotated by means of worm gearing on a shaft at the end opposite to the hollow shaft.
