Abstract

2931. Brooke, R. G. Feb. 3. Filters.-Fig. 1 shows an apparatus of the type of a steam separator. The steam or other fluid enters a casing 1 at 2, passes round an outer cylinder 5, and in through a vertical slit at its further side. Thence it passes in a similar way round an inner cylinder 5, and through a similar slit into its interior, whence it escapes to the outlet 3. The cylinders are supported at their upper ends by a ring 11, and at their lower ends by a block 8, which is attached to the upper part of the casing by a rod 10. The ring 11 may have a bridge by which it is attached to the rod 10, and the block is suitably perforated to allow water or other foreign substances to escape to the discharge 4. The arrangement may be modified in various ways, and any number of cylinders 5 can be used. In order to reach the interior the casing is made in two parts which can be detached, the cylinders 5 still remaining attached to the upper part. The apparatus can be converted into a filter by introducing a filtering-medium into the space or spaces between the cylinders 5. The vertical slits may be replaced by holes at the ends of the cylinders, the flow being thus directed upwards or downwards through the length of the filtering-medium. Fig. 4 shows the form preferably used for filters. The holes in the cylinders are shown at 7<a>. In this case the supporting-block 8 is fixed slightly above the bottom of the casing, a space 9 beneath being occupied by sponge or the like. The liquid thence passes onwards through holes 8<c>. Suitable valves and bye-passages are provided for reversing the flow for cleansing. Fig. 6 shows another form, in which the filtering-body is built up of rings 16 between which are interposed layers 16<a> of flannel or the like supported by perforated plates 17.
