Abstract

16,320. Killon, H. B. July 24. Sewage, treating bacteriological processes.-Relates to automatic apparatus for filling, holding full and discharging, filter or bacteria beds for the purification of sewage &c., such as is described in Specification No. 5834, A.D. 1901. The bell float F and inlet valve A are raised by the filling of the chamber f with liquid led by the pipe B from the previous bed in the series, and the bed then fills from a conduit opening into the chamber a. The chamber M, which is open to the filling bed, likewise fills, whereupon the ball valve u opens, allows air to escape from the float F, and closes the valve A. The outlet valve 0 is opened by the rising of the float J in the chamber j, which is filled from the bed by a siphon S, the flow through which is regulated by a cock s. The float J is either elongated or divided into two parts, one of which, as shown, is fixed low on its rod so as to prevent the valve 0 closing before the bed is empty. The siphonic action may be aided by a cone C at the foot of the shorter limb and the use of an internal converging tube as in the Rogers Field siphon. If it is required to open the valve A or close the valve O by band, a detent D swinging on the arm of the valve A is employed. A check valve Q may be placed below the valve 0, in order to vary the size of the discharge orifice as the head of liquid varies. The float F may be made to rise at any desired rate by placing it in a chamber in which is a fixed level of water, and actuating it by means of air from a fixed dome of suitable size in a chamber connected to the preceding bed. A retaining valve in the air pipe prevents the valve closing on the discharge of the preceding bed. The float may be placed abova the valve, no lever being used. The air for lifting the float may also be stored in an intermediate vessel, and may be passed on to the float in the succeeding bed when the intermediate one is out of action. Such pneumatic apparatus may also be used for actuating the outlet valve O. The sewage is discharged into a tank X communicating by an ordinary siphon U with a closing tank or roughing filter G, whence the sewage passes to the beds by means of a siphon S' used as described in Specification No. 2647, A.D. 1900 this arrangement causing the siphon S<1> to supply each bed with a volume of sewage which is practically independent of the rate of supply to the tank X.
