Abstract
15,309. Stirling, R. July 10. Raising liquids by aerating ascending column. -Relates to apparatus for raising oils or other liquids from deep wells by means of compressed air. The raising of the liquid depends on the aeration of it in the discharge pipe, the apparatus being suitable for wells of considerable depth, in which the depth of liquid is small. Fig. 3 shows a sectional elevation of the lower part of the apparatus, which consists of a suction pipe k, a discharge pipe c, a compressed-air supply pipe b, a restricted nozzle d round which the compressed air enters through apertures e, a throat f, and a ball valve l. To the extension m, a packer n of rubber or other material is fixed, below which a ring of soft metal o is disposed, which rests in the seating h. The weight of the pipe c causes the packer n to expand and make a tight joint. The compressed air entering through the apertures e forces the liquid up the tube c. In another form shown, no packer n or ball valve l is used. The tube b need not be concentric with the tube c as shown, or it may be disposed within it. In a modification, two sets of air inlets are used, the additional set being placed either above or below the inlet nozzle d.
