Abstract

14,371. Posgate, G. E. June 27. Sails; masts ; rigging.-In fore- and-aft rigged ships fitted with rigid metal shrouds, which take the place of a central mast, as described in Specification No. 10,049, A.D. 1888, the mainsail is fitted in the clear space between the shrouds, as shown in Fig. 2. The boom c is attached to the deck either by a bridle or a universal joint e. The yard is suspended from the junction of the shrouds g, h. This junction may be a socket for the topmast k and provided with cross-trees k<1>, or the topmast may be of two rigid shrouds similar to g, h, extending from the ends of the cross-trees. A modification is described, in which the shrouds constitute both lower-mast and topmast, two sails being pivotally mounted. The bcom c may be of lattice-girder construction.
