Abstract

14,109. Preston, W. R. June 24. Spark-arresters.- Relates to spark-arresters in which the adherence of soot is minimized. Fig. 2 shows the smokebox of a locomotive fitted with one form of apparatus. Between the blast pipe a-and a cone or petticoat b is mounted a device comprising a series of bars c, the lower ends of which rest on a flange d projecting from the blast pipe, and are kept in position by a ring e, through holes in which they extend. The upper ends extend through holes in a ring g, being sufficiently f r e e to vibrate. The rings g, e are held by bars h, which are riveted to them and fastened to the flange d. The lower ends of the bars c are staggered in the ring e, in order that the lower ends may be at the same distance apart as the upper ends. Fig. 5 shows another form of the apparatus, in which semi-annular plates l are loosely inserted, in louvre fashion, one above the other, in upwardly and out. wardly extending barsj, which are secured at their lower ends to a ring k surrounding the blast pipe. In some cases the cone b is omitted, the chimney and spark-arrester being brought close together.
