Abstract

13,700. Robertson, W. F. June 19. Centrifugal governors.-A self-governing windmill is shown in sectional plan in Fig. 2. A vertical shaft A carries two star-wheel frames, only the lower one b being shown, which are braced together, and between which vanes Care mounted on shafts c. Wind blowing in the direction of the arrows X presses the vanes 2 against stops b<1>, and the vanes 5 against stops b<2>, while the remaining vane 6 swings free. The stops b<2> are normally shaped as shown in Fig. 4. The stops b<1> are projecting arms on rods E mounted on shafts D. These rods carry adjustable weights e, and are connected to the frame by springs. Each weighted arm acts as a centrifugal governor, and, under excessive speed, swings outwards and allows its vane to swing free.
