Abstract

12,914. Wilkinson, R. J. June 9. Sprinklers, automatic.-Relates to improvements in the sprinkler described in Specification No. 4520, A.D. 1903. The valve is opened by the collapse of a support, brought about by the closing of an electric circuit. Radiated heat from a resistance coil in circuit, either fuses a portion of the strut, or destroys the latter by igniting an explosive. Figs. 1 and 2 show these two types of sprinkler. The valve 1 is kept against its seating 2 by the fusible strut 3, Fig. 1, or 17, Fig. 2. The resistance coil 6 surrounds but is insulated from the strut 3, one end being connected to a battery while the other is earthed. When the circuit is closed, the fusible portion of the strut 3 melts and the strut collapses. The strut 17, Fig. 2, made, preferably, of glass with a metal top and bottom, is filled with an explosive, through which passes the wire 20. The metal top is earthed while the bottom is connected with a battery through one of the bolts 11, which pass through the insulating-sleeves 12. When the circuit is completed, the strut is exploded. To prevent the scattering of the glass, the nozzle is fitted with a perforated cover. Fig. 5 shows the thermostatic device for closing the circuit when a certain temperature is reached, which result is attained by the mercury 28 rising to the rod 29.
