Abstract

12,831. Bartlett, J. June 8. Acetylene lamps.-In lampe for motor cars and for advertising, domestic, and other purposes, the calcium-carbide case or cartridge e is formed with a conical bottom f, through which passes a perforated tube i open at its lower end. By means of a rod u having a pin w working in a curved slot v, or of a push-rod held where required by a set-screw, the rubber or leather disc valve s is lowered against the pressure of the spring x away from the open end of the tube i. The water entering the casing c by the slots d' then traverses the perforated tube i, the perforated or slotted tube j on the cone f, and the loose perforated sleeve k, to the carbide. The gas generated passes through the perforated plate g and the packing-material in the chamber h, which material may be saturated with scent to obviate the unpleasant odour of the gas, and thence either direct to the burner pipe, as indicated by the dotted lines, or through a curved pipe A, a washerless union C, and a pipe D to a second purifying-chamber E, filled with packing- material and discharging into the burner pipe. Tight joints are formed by the leather washer n bearing against the soft metal plug o, and by the rubber or leather washer l. The coupling B permits of the cover g being turned when secured by a bayonet joint, or the cover may be secured by screw bolts and nuts.
