Abstract

12,262. Cloud, J. W. May 29. Stopping trains. - In order to provide means for automatically applying a fluid-pressure brake on a train or car by a tripping - device on the permanent way, a branch of the train-pipe is fitted with a valve similar to that used in the Westing- house hose coupling, and adapted to be opened by the tripping-device. This device strikes the arm 5 of the valve 6, so that the lugs 8, 9 are disengaged from the bevelled projections 10, 11 on the fixed part 1 of the valve, and the cap 6 is lifted from its seat 7, the escape of the air applying the brakes. A spring pin 12 on either the movable or the fixed part of the valve maintains it normally in position.
