Abstract

Armatures ; field magnets.-In a magneto-electric machine for use as a dynamo or motor, the field magnets are unprovided with windings and are magnetized by induction from the armature current. The upper and lower frames, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, of the machine are of diamagnetic material, and are fitted with internal field magnets G, H between which the armature K, Fig. 1, rotates when the shaft A is held in the bearings B. The armature core and field magnets are built up of stampings, of the shapes shown in Figs. 4 and 7, of tinned soft iron, such as commercial tin plate, or may be tinned after they are cut. The tin is fused when the stampings have been clamped together, and acts as a magnetic insulator between them. The armature is wound longitudinally at right-angles to its own and the field-magnet stampings. A commutator E is fitted to the shaft A. A machine having any desired number of poles may be constructed on the above lines. The field magnets may otherwise be composed of strips or wires suitably disposed about the armature to be energized or intensified by the armature current.
