Abstract
9902. Barber, T. W. May 1. Motor road vehicles. -Relates to friction clutches and brakes of the expanding - ring type, illustrated as applied to the driving clutch of a motor car. A ring a split at one, two, or more points is grooved as shown in Fig. 2, and, when expanded, engages corresponding grooves in the case of clutches. It is fixed in the case of braking mechanism. A lubricant contained in the pocket b<1> passes into the spaces between the grooves c to prevent shock when the split ring is expanded. The ring a engages the shaft d by means of a lug e, Fig. 1, on each portion fitting into a socket f in a sleeve g, which fits the square portion h of the shaft. A flexible connection is made between the ring and each socket f by means of bolts j and springs. The socket and lug may be reversed. Bolts m secure the ring b to the flywheel l. The ring is expanded by wedges n, which are forced between the bevelled ends of the sections by means of levers o, Figs. 2 and 3, and screws p working in a capstan nut q carried in a pocket r fixed to the shaft d. The nut is retained in position by means of a set-screw t, and is adjusted to take up looseness in the parts as the ring wears out. The levers o are slotted at their outer ends to receive pins attached to arms v forming part of a collar u which is operated by means of a forked lever z.
