Abstract

9571. Feldkamp, F. A. April 28. Secondary batteries.- To reduce the weight and increase the lift of a cell, especially for automobiles, the usual grids are replaced by thin sheets of metal, metal foil, or other suitable material the active material is attached by means of tissue or porous fabric, and a special separator and a special method of connecting the plates together are employed. The lead sheets 4 are of about 01 inch in thickness, and are surrounded by the covering 6, which may be of parchment, paper linen, felt, asbestos fabric &c., and in size is double the area of the plate, so as to bend around it on one edge, as at 8 or 9. The active material 7 has been previously applied to the inner surface of the fabric, either by pasting the latter over with the red lead &c. or litharge, according to whether the plate is to be positive or negative, or by repeatedly dipping it into a lead-salt solution, and then placing it between zinc sheets or covering it with zinc powder. In the latter case the plates are then formed electrolytically. The whole is then stitched with threads 11 in a sewing machine, and a number of holes, five being given as an example, are made through the combined electrode. This prepared electrode is dipped first in a bath of dilute sulphuric acid, then in water, and then in a solution of ammonia. Between each pair of electrodes is a separator 14 formed of plaited cane or wood strips. The electrodes and separators are arranged alternately, with a separator at each end, and insulating- tubes 21 are passed through the holes. Through each insulating-tube and each insulating en 1 plate 15 passes a rod 22 screwed at one end into a metal, e.g. aluminium, plate 17, while its head rests in a countersunk opening in the opposite metal plate. The whole fits closely within a rubber or like cell or case 1. The ends 5 of all the positive plates 4 are connected up to one terminal at one side of the cell, and all the negative ones to another at the other side.
