Abstract

8669. Carolan, E. A., [General Electric Co.]. April 16. Mountings; turrels.-Relates to mechanism for electrically-controlled guns and turrets requiring laying in altitude and azimuth. The projector drum or the like is mounted on a turntable C, Fig. 2, running upon a ball bearing F on a base B. Vertical training is effected by means either of a motor H, Figs. 1 and 2, and a worm 12, Fig. 4, or of a hand-wheel 17 and a jointed worm shaft 18, which actuate a hollow shaft 5 through corresponding gear-wheels 6, 7 and clutches 20, 19 adjusted by a screw rod 23 and haud-wheel 24. Segmental gear on the projector drum engages with a gearwheel 1 keyed on the shaft 5. The motor H and shaft 5 are carried by a plate c detachably secured to the turntable C. Horizontal training is effected by means either of a motor K, Fig. 1, and a worm 28, Fig. 5, or of a hand-wheel 48 and bevel gear 47, which actuate a shaft 27 carrying a pinion 3 engaging with a gear-wheel 4 on a flange of the turntable C. The shaft 27 is provided with keyed pinions 35,44 engaging with pinions 33, 42, which are loose on a shaft 26, and are attested to armatures 34, 43 of magnetic friction clutches 30, 40, the former on a loose gear-wheel 29 engaging with the worm 28, and the latter on a locus wheel 39 geared to the wheel 29. The clutch 30 serves for the usual training, and the clutch 40 serves for rotating a projector horizontally at a low speed for searching. The clutches 30, 40 are constructed with magnetizing-coils 32, 52, collector rings 31, 51, and brushes 49, 53. The clutches 30, 40 are operated by means of a double-throw switch and a mastercontroller, which also operates groups M, N, Fig. 1, of three electromagnetic switches for controlling the motors K, H respectively. Two switches serve for closing the circuit through the corresponding motor armature in either direction through a resistance, and are provided with auxiliary contacts so arranged that, when the switches are opened, the motor armature is short-circuited. The third switch serves for short-circuiting the resistance. The currents for the projector lamp and the motor H, Figs. 1 and 2, are carried by collector rings 79 on the turntable C and brushes 80 in the base B.
