Abstract
8438. Keyes, W. F., and Stark, W. F. April 14. Shaft couplings; mounting and securing pulleys, wheels, &c. on shafts.- Relates to a wedge fastening particularly applicable for securing together lengths of shafting and for securing pulleys, wheels, collars, &c. to shafts. Figs. 2 and 3 show a shaft coupling. A shell 11 is provided with a shaft passage 12, and two points 13 with eccentric outer walls open into this passage. In each of these pockets 13 are located two wedges 14, 15. Each wedge 15 bears against one of the adjoining ends of the shafts, and the wedge 14 takes between the wedge 15 and the pocket wall. By means of a screw 16, the wedge 14 is drawn to its seat, thereby forcing the wedge 15 into engagement with the shaft. A wedge 17, movable by means of a screw 19, is located in a recess 18 and serves to move the wedge 15 circumferentially between the shaft and the wedge 14, thereby increasing the gripping action. When the device is applied to pulley hubs, collars, or couplings of small sizes, the wedge 14 may be dispensed with ; the wedge 15 takes between the shaft and the pocket wall and is moved by means of the wedge 17.
