Locking nuts. - The face of the nut is arched, and horizontal slots a are cut in the sides, thus rendering the parts c somewhat elastic. When the nut is screwed tightly down on to a bearing-surface, the parts c tend to bend upwards, and thus cause the nut to grip tightly on the bolt or screw. The slots a may be inclined instead of horizontal, and, instead of arching the face of the nut, projections may be formed on the faces of the parts c.
