Abstract

6501. Carolan, E. A., [General Electric Co.]. March 20. Bending. - Relates to forms for winding coils and more especially those intended for armatures, and consists in a winding-form on which coils having different numbers of layers or turns can be formed, or coils composed of conductors having different diameters, while the proper configuration of the coil is obtained in a single operation and the coil is readily removed when completed. Starting from a gauge 17, Fig. 1, carried by a removable plate 11, Fig. 4, and serving to regulate the length of wire to form the leads, the wires are clamped in a cup-shaped piece 19 by means of a screw head, and then wound against inclined walls 22 on the main frame 1, a face 23 on the detachable plate 11 being at right-angles to the wall 22. The wires are then carried across the suitably-inclined ends of the winding-form, and through off-set-forming hooks 19, 19, respectively on the main frame 1 and detachable plate 11, a slight twist being given to the wires to bring them in contact with the projections 21. The off-sets in the coil, produced by the hooks 19, 19, enable the coils to overlap when in place on the core of the dynamo-electric machine. A sliding piece 2, with an end wall 20, is held clamped during these operations by means of a nut 10. This piece moves on parallel guides 3, which are fixed to the frame 1 in an inclined position, and carry a lever 5 having an eccentric cam-slot 6 at one end in which a pivot 7 on the sliding piece 2 engages, the guides 3 having a slot 8 concentric with the pivot 4 on which the lever 5 turns. The lever is clamped by means of a stud 9 and a nut 10. After the wires have passed the second side of the device and over the piojections 21, they are held clamped by the wall 20 of the sliding piece, and then pass through the second set of forming-hooks 19, 19. The operation is repeated until the desired number of convolutions has been made. Each time the wire comes to the sliding piece 2, the latter is raised to admit the wires. The ends of the last turn, which form the commutator leads and are on the top side of the coil, are measured by a gauge 24 before cutting the wite. Pieces of string are tied round the coil and the plate 11 may then be removed from the frame 1 by withdrawing a sliding bolt. On removing the nut 10 also, the coil may be taken off the form and slipped into the slots in the core of a dynamoelectric machine. The winding-form is supported by a standard adapted to allow the form to turn in auy direction in a given plane.
