4892. Radcliffe, C., and Jones, D. March 3. Forks.-A crown for uniting the front forks of a bicycle to the steering-tube is made in two pieces, each stamped from sheet steel. One piece consists of an external box-shaped shell a, Figs. 1 and 2, made by the drawing-through process, and the other consists of an internal shell c made in, the same way as the shell a and subsequently pressed in at the parts d, Fig. 4, so as to form a complete circle for the reception of the steering-tube, and stiffened side pieces for brazing to the inner sides of the forks. The bottom of the shell c closes up the underside of the crown, and its edges e<1>, Fig. 2, are flanged down to provide additional surface for brazing. In a modification, the shell c is made open-ended and the sides are pressed in, as shown in Fig. 5, to form double webs h. This form of inner shell may also be made in three pieces-two side plates and a bottom plate.
