Abstract

3775. Rackham, R. Feb. 17. Windmills.-Relates (1) to means for allowing the sails to turn away from a high wind, and (2) to means for altering the stroke of the pump, driven by the mill, to suit the power available. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the shaft c', carrying the sails, rotates in bearings on a turntable b, which can turn in a socket. The shaft d<2>, carrying the fantail, can turn in bearings on the turntable, and is provided with an arm f, Figs. 1 and 2, connected by a rod f<1> to a tubular shaft g. At the lower end of this shaft is a stud g<1>, on which is loosely mounted a quadrant h gearing. with a quadrant e on the boss of the turntable. The quadrant h has two arms h', h<2>, Fig. 3, the first of which is connected to a sliding sleeve k<1>, while the other is connected to a spring in a box m'. The sails can thus turn away from the wind, compressing the said spring, which returns them to the original position when the wind drops. Should the wind become excessive, the sails turn away until an arm n encounters a stop o, whereupon the spindle n' is rotated to bring a cam-shaped brake block into contact with the disc c'. The mill is shown as employed to drive a pump, the rod being reciprocated by a crank on the shaft c<2>. In a modification, a vertical spindle is rotated by bevel gear. Fig. 5 shows the means for varying the stroke of the pump. The rod p is adjustably attached to a vibrating link to which the pump rod s is pivoted.
