Abstract

3681. Evans, E. C. Feb. 17. Wedges. - Consists of a wedge apparatus for propping or supporting vessels in docks and slips, and other heavy bodies, such as girders and machinery, by the use of which the usual side shores are dispensed with. Fig. 2 shows a a sectional elevation of the apparatus, which consists of two blocks a, i forced apart by a wedge-piece g. This is accomplished by means of pinions carried by the piece g and worked by a shaft o, gearing with racks b, j j on the blocks. Pawls d, l prevent backward motion by engaging racks c, k, and may be removed by pulling the cord e. The cradle m carries a wood block, and has a tilting movement about an axis in its length. Fig. 10 shows a method of operating the wedgepiece q by means of screws and nuts, the latter being fixed to the blocks p, r. Fig. 17 shows a modification of Fig. 10, in which the screws are operated differently. When screw-operated, the apparatus may be used for tilting the vessel slightly.
