Abstract

1515. Normann, W. Jan. 21. Fatty acids. -Unsaturated fatty acids or their glycerides are converted into saturated compounds by reduction with hydrogen, a powdered metal, such as nickel, cobalt, copper, or iron, being also used as a catalytic agent. The catalytic material may be used repeatedly. Pure oleic acid, commercial fatty acids, olive oil, linseed oil, fish oil, and other fats and oils may be treated by this process. Instead of pure hydrogen, commercial gas mixtures, such as water gas, may be used.
