Abstract

28,231. Baker, E. G. Dec. 22. Rail joints; chairs; rails, securing to sleepers.-At the joints, the rail ends are mitered or bevelled and are held by fishplates F with bevelled edges and fishbolts G, around which coiled springs H are placed under the nuts to bear on the fishplates. The joint is made in a long chair or shoe D, of which one flange or jaw may be adjustable, being held by a bolt Q and wedge-shaped washer S. These shoes are provided with holes or notches for spiking or bolting to the sleepers. The sleepers may be of girder section provided with an outer fixed jaw and an adjustable inside jaw B, but the jaws may bejomitted on the sleeper in the middle of the rail length or at a square joint for a frog. At that point holes may be made in the flange of the rail so that it can be spiked or bolted direct to the sleeper, so that expansion is only free towards the mitered joint.
