Abstract

28,061. Berry, J. Dec. 19. Tents.-Field-hospital tents are constructed with double roof coverings the inner one of which is cut away in parts to receive a net for ventilating purposes, and the outer one being supported so that it can be raised and lowered for summer and winter use respectively. For summer use, the cross-piece C<1>, Fig. 2, is supported by shoulders on spikes fixed in the ends of the uprights A, which are preferably jointed, and a white duck outer cover L rests on the cross-piece and is secured by guys l and pegs. A spike or ring is fixed at each end of the cross-piece to receive guy ropes E and eyelets of the tent. The ridge f of the inner cover G is supported by ropes F from the cross-piece C<1>, the cover, which is preferably of a greenish khaki colour, being held by guys and pegs. Nets H are let into the cover G, and coverlets I, Fig. 3, may be drawn over, or removed from, the nets by ropes j passing through eyelets in the coverlets and over pulleys or guides on the cross-piece C<1> and ridge f and actuated from the inside of the tent. For winter use, the cross-piece C<1> is passed through ventilation openings in the front and back pieces of the tent G just below the rings f, and, instead of resting on shoulders on the spikes at the ends of the uprights, the spikes are turned so that the shoulders pass through slots in the cross-piece, which then descends on to the top of the uprights. The cover L is afterwards placed in position and rests directly on the cover G, the eaves guys of the cover G being passed through corresponding grommet holes of the cover L and pegged. The cross-piece C' and cover L project beyond the tent proper, and where a series of tents are arranged together, may form a vestibule between them.
