Abstract
25,307. Hosking, J. Nov. 18. Rock drills, percussive, with means for injecting water or other liquid to the end of the bit for cooling it and removing the cuttings &c. Water under pressure is admitted at c<9> to the space c<3> in the cylinder cover, and passes at each stroke through the non-return valve b<2> and passages b<5>, d' in the pistonrod and tool to the end of the bit. The cover may be made in halves, held together by a clamp c<7> or otherwise. At the ends of the water chamber c<2> are leather packing-rings c<4> held by india-rubber or spring metal rings c<5>, and by the water pressure admitted to their backs by ports c<6>. An intercepting channel c' and outlet c<2> for water, air, or steam are provided in the cover between the water chamber and the main cylinder. The tool is held in the piston-rod by a bushing and clamp or conical socket, india-rubber, asbestos or steel spring packing-material b<11> being used to make a watertight joint.
