Abstract
25,092. Kelso, M. G., and Douglas, E. Nov. 15. Curling.-Relates to curling stones or frames. Fig. 2 shows in section a stone consisting of two hollow plates A, A, the lower plate A' having a series of hollow chambers a in each of which a large ball B is placed, surrounded by one or more rings of small balls b free to work on the bearing surfaces. The balls may be put into the chambers from above, and covered by a screwed-down plate C. The spaces between the chambers a may be either solid or hollow. The top plate A is secured to the lower plate A' by a screw-threaded spindle D, over which the operating-handle D' is screwed or otherwise secured. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the chambers A<2> are cast on the lower plate, and the balls are inserted from below, and held in place by flat disc plates A<3>, secured as shown. When the curling stones or frames are made of wood or stone, each may be formed in one piece, the chambers for the balls being fitted with metal socket sleeves. A protecting ring flange or a ring metal plate with recesses for each ball may be screwed on from below. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the stones are formed of top and bottom wooden parts A, A', and have an intermediate metal rim part E provided with downwardly-projecting sockets E' to hold the balls, which are held up by a lower ring plate or plates A<3>. In some cases, the small balls b may be dispensed with, and the large balls be free to move in their respective sockets ; or, fixed balls or projecting surfaces may be formed on or fitted into the under surface of the lower plate ; or, a projecting ring surface may be formed on the under part of stone. In another modification, a circular groove or series of grooves may be formed on the under surface of the curling-stone, to receive the balls, which are held in position by ring plates screwed on from below. In some cases, these grooves may be lined with metal rings of inverted - trough shape.
